Since the topic of age has been brought up in a couple of different posts, an idea popped into my head. I don't know if it's possible or if it would even matter but here it is anyway.
What if there were a way to have someone's age displayed with their user name or status tag? Speaking for myself, I rarely read profiles because I mainly interact on the boards with people. I don't really get involved with the graphiti boards or quick notes so other than a few people, don't really pay attention to the age of every poster.
If I were more involved in those, perhaps I woudl to keep myself out of trouble but that's beside the point.
Perhaps if we saw peoples ages listed next to their user names, that migh shape how we respond to them.
Sure, a perve is going to be a perv and not care so perhaps it really doesn't matter. Conversely though, perhaps seeing the number 15 after a user's name might, just might, make him or her think twice before posting or sending something potentially inappropriate.
Anyway, just something I thought of. Let the bashing begin. lol
Somehow I doubt it. Sounds like a pipedream. Creepy people are going to be creepy no matter how many numbers you shove at them. I can garrantee the first response to this if it were implemented would be, "well how do we know those ages are real? People lie all the time."
Makes sense. you can select the user in the drop down box and in the quicknotes text box type /view (that's a forward slash), and look at their profile. Their age will either be displayed, or if they have hidden that, it will say 'under 18' or '18 or over'.
I made this mistake when discussing weapons / combat knives with a young man a few years ago, and I was at least led to believe that in the UK (where he was from), you're not supposed to discuss such matters with an under-age one. UK culture apparently take a similar view toward combat gear as American society does towards sex. Perhaps even with all the psychology things to go with it, seeing as culture and psychology are tightly linked.
Anyway after that if it's alcohol, tobacco, or arms, I check the profile for the age. Just be aware, it's not just sex, at least in some countries, something as innocent as a boot knife or a machete can be viewed with the same cultural taboos sex is in America.
To that end, I also check the location.
There needs to be a way to keep young kids off this website because there is some awful stuff that goes on here that no one under thirteen should see. Honestly I wouldn't want even my teenager on this place. Too many bitter hateful people that have nothing better to do than tear into people and make negative unproductive comments.
I seriously don't think it'd work. Because, age is taken differently by different people. Some respect it, others don't. So, even amoungst adults this happens too.
*amongst*
Give the age issue a rest.
No one has to do anything just because you say so.
It doesn't work, because some don't have age revealed. Next due to us having so many countries involved, and peoples feelings about age as it relates to culture it won't protect everyone.
Next, just because someone is of age, they might get upset no matter what is said to them. Some people get mad if you just say hello. Smile.
I think that such a feature may lead to a certain amount of prejudice as well. I can see the "what do you know, you're just a kid" comments already.
Yes, good point, people are already rude enough here as it is.
Well, like I said, it was just something to toss out there. Yall raise some good arguments as to why it really wouldn't do any good. Chalk this one up to throwing stuff out there and seeing what sticks. This one didn't stick. lol
Make no mistake, it has merit.
Yeah, it definitely has merit, but I unfortunately don't think it'd do much good. Heck, your age as it relates to the legal age of consent in America, eighteen, is already known on your profile, assuming you don't lie, and that's probably even a bit much for some people. Doesn't bug me, but then I've got nothing to hide or worry about either.
Yes, a good topic. Smile.
